Texas State Finishes Second in Conference Championship After Playoff Battle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Texas State women's golf finished second at the Sun Belt Conference Championship, coming up short after two playoff holes against ULM. Junia Gabasa and Yvonne Chamness were named to the all-tournament team following their performances at the LPGA International course.

This is the fourth runner-up finish for the Bobcats at the Sun Belt Conference championship. In 2014, Texas State'sĀ first year with the Sun Belt, the team finished second after falling in a playoff.Ā Ā

The Bobcats recorded their second highest round of the tournament on the final day shooting five-over 293. Texas State and ULM both finished the tournament 16-over 880 to push a championship playoff. After an unsuccessful 18thhole tiebreaker, ULM claimed the conference championship on the 10thĀ hole.Ā

Texas State had the second lowest 18-hole total in the final round to give them their next best finish of the season after winning the team and individual championship at the Texas State Invitational this spring. The Bobcats led the field in birdies with 37.Ā

Junia Gabasa led the Bobcats and tied for third place, which is her season-high finish and her best finish at a conference championship. Freshman Yvonne Chamness recorded a new 18-hole season low following her best round of the tournament today at two-under 70. The Austin, Texas native climbed 18 spots on the leaderboard, the biggest jump of the day among the 65 competitors. The performances from Gabasa and Chamness earned the duo all-tournament team honors.Ā

Matilda Svahn finished inside the top-10Ā Ā for the second time this season after shooting her lowest round of the tournament one-over 73 with three birdies.Ā

Leading the first day of the tournament, Marine Griffaut finished tied for 36thĀ 16-over par and had her second highest 54-hole total of the season.Ā
