SAN MARCOS, Texas – A record setting crowd of 3,425 saw Texas State (20-13) take on 19th-ranked Texas (24-10) Monday night at Bobcat Ballpark. However, it would be the Longhorns that came out on top by a score of 5-2.
Â
"I thought it was a good game. Offensively we had chances early starch one or two runs across and find a way to get the momentum. They did a good job in innings three through six in slowing us down at the plate," said head coach
Steven Trout. "We threw the ball well tonight. Both
Peyton Zabel and
Nathan Medrano had good outings. Overall, we also played really good defense too."
Â
Both
Ben McClain and
Chase Mora had a double apiece while
Ryan Leary hit a triple and plated both runs on the night for the Bobcats.
Â
Peyton Zabel (0-1) struck out three but surrendered three runs on four walks and three base knocks to take the loss. Picking up the win was Kobe Minchey (1-0) after throwing three scoreless innings and striking out four.
Â
A season-high eight strikeouts were recorded by
Nathan Medrano in 4.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Reece Gould pitched a scoreless frame and both
Jonathan Martinez and
Rhett McCaffety recorded an out apiece.
Â
Mora led off the first with a double to right field but would end up stranded on third at the end of the inning. Next time at the plate, both
Peyton Lewis and
August Ramirez were able to get in scoring position where they would be left when the frame concluded.
Â
The Longhorns scored first in the third when they were able to load the bases, which was followed by a walk and two RBI single to give them a 3-0 advantage.
Â
A two RBI double in the eighth would see UT add to its lead.
Â
McClain leadoff the bottom of the frame with a double down the left field line and
Davis Powell would be plunked three pitches into his plate appearance. After the next two batters were struck out,
Ryan Leary was called on to pinch hit and the Longhorns then made a call to the bullpen to bring in their closer Zane Morehouse.
Â
The first pitch that Leary saw he sent to left center and off the wall. The ball bounced past the centerfielder and allowed Leary to cruise into third for his team leading second triple of the season and cut the deficit to 5-2.
Â
Next up is a return trip to Austin to take on the Longhorns from Disch-Falk Field. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network.
