NEW ORLEANS – A historic day at the plate and helping Texas State to a weekend sweep resulted in
Chase Mora being named the Sun Belt Conference's Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Â
The freshman set a new program record with four home runs in the second game of the series against North Dakota State. He is the first player in the NCAA to hit four homers in a game this season and the first true freshman to do so since Florida's JJ Schwarz did so in 2015. His single-game long ball total broke the Sun Belt record and is tied for the third most in NCAA history.
Â
Mora finished the game with nine RBI to tie the Bobcats' single-game record. The mark was set by John Tompkins on Mar. 28, 1999 against Southeastern Louisiana and matched by Tanner Hill on May 16, 2015 against UT Arlington. The Tomball, Texas native's RBI total tied the Sun Belt's game record that had been accomplished 10 times previously with the most recent being by South Alabama's Eddie Paperella against Eastern Illinois on Feb. 18, 2017.
Â
For the week, Mora batted .385 (5-for-13) with his only other hit being a single in the Sunday's series finale.
Â
It is the first conference Player of the Week award for Mora. The freshman was named one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week for the second time on Monday. The opening weekend of the season saw him chosen as the NCBWA Dick Howser Trophy Award National Hitter of the Week after hitting a home run in his first three collegiate plate appearances.
Â
Mora is the third Texas State student-athlete to take home one of the conference's weekly awards this season.
Jose Gonzalez and
Levi Wells claimed the Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively, after the first series of the season.
Â
The Bobcats are in action tonight against No. 11 TCU with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Bobcat Ballpark.
