SAN MARCOS, Texas – As one of the most accurate kickers in the country, Texas State's
Mason Shipley was named a semifinalist for the 2023 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Orange Bowl, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced on Thursday.
Â
The Groza Award is given to the nation's top place-kicker each season. Shipley was one of 20 semifinalists named.
Â
Shipley is 11-for-11 in field goals this year, making him one of three FBS kickers with a perfect field goal percentage through the first 10 weeks of the season. He is also 39-for-39 on point after attempts, which helps him rank 36th in the country and fourth in the Sun Belt in total points scored with 72.
Â
With three regular season games remaining along with a potential bowl game, Shipley is three successful field goals away from tying the school record for most in a season, which was set by his former teammate
Seth Keller in 2021 and 2022.
Â
Shipley is in his first year as the full-time place-kicker for the Bobcats. Last year, in his lone field goal attempt, he tied the school record for longest field goal with a successful 54-yarder against FIU.
Â
Also among the list of 20 semifinalists is Shipley's twin brother, Matthew, at Hawaii. Matthew is a two-time semifinalist for the award.
Â
Out of Liberty Hill, Texas, Shipley is the lone Sun Belt Conference kicker on the list of this year's Groza Award semifinalists.
Â
Semifinalists will be voted on by a panel of more than 100 FBS head coaches, SIDs, media members, former Groza finalists, and current NFL kickers to select the three finalists. These finalists will be announced on November 28 and honored at the 32nd annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Awards Banquet on December 4 in Palm Beach County. The same panel then selects the winner, who will be announced on ESPN during the Home Depot College Football Awards on Friday, December 8.
Â
Texas State plays at Coastal Carolina on Saturday (2:30 pm CT/3:30 pm ET, ESPN+). The Bobcats are in a tie for second in the Sun Belt West Division while the Chanticleers are second in the Sun Belt East Division.
