NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference offices announced Tuesday morning that Texas State middle blocker was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week. Texas State won both its matches this weekend on the road at Southern Miss.
"I'm excited for [Hanner] to be recognized for her play this past weekend," said Head Coach
Sean Huiet. "Our middles have been working so hard and you can see it's paying off. Â Bailey had a career day with almost 3 blocks a set, which is big time. Â She keeps getting better every week and is starting to peak at the right time."
Hanner was a defensive powerhouse this weekend for the Bobcats. The sophomore led the conference in blocks per set with 1.57 and had a career-high eight blocks in three sets (2.66 per set) in the Bobcats sweep over Southern Miss. The middle blocker didn't register a single blocking error and still helped out offensively with 12 kills on the weekend.
The sophomore is averaging 1.04 blocks per set through conference play, good for sixth in the conference. Hanner is a key part of the Bobcats conference-leading 2.58 blocks per set through conference play so far.
This is Hanner's first Sun Belt Player of the Week Award in her career at Texas State. Hanner is the fourth Bobcat to win a conference weekly award this week.
KJ Johnson and
Samantha Wunsch won Offensive Player of the Week in weeks one and two, respectively.
Ryann Torres won setter of the week in two.
Texas State will then return home for a pair of "Dig Pink" matches with South Alabama where the Bobcats will welcome back alumni including the 2013 and 2003 Championship winning teams. The matches are Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. and Oct. 21 at 12 p.m.. Get your tickets at txst.com/tickets.
