SAN MARCOS, Texas – Goals from
Bailey Peschel and
Olivia Wright just over three minutes apart was the difference as the Texas State soccer team claimed a 2-1 victory on the road over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday night.
With the win, the Bobcats improved to 3-0-0 for the second best start in program history while the Islanders dropped to 2-1-0.
TXST held an 18-6 shots advantage and placed nine of their attempts on frame. Wright paced all players with five shots and three shots on goal. Also with multiple shot attempts for the Bobcats was
Zoe Junior (3) and Peschel (2).
In goal,
Katelyn Chrisman made one save on the night.
There were four good chances in the first half to find the back of the net for Texas State. Two came off the foot of Junior while one apiece came from
Kiara Gonzales and
Alexis Neal. Three of the occasions saw the goalkeeper make a save and Junior had a shot clank off the crossbar.
Wright nearly got the ball past the keeper but Kennedy Stelling was just able to get her leg on the ball in the 59th minute.
The breakthrough came two minutes later when Peschel sent a long ball ahead that Wright was able to get on. Her first attempt was stopped by the goalie but ricocheted off an Islander and back to the junior forward to knock it into the empty net.
Wright followed in the 64th minute with a cross into the box from the right side that found Peschel. The Cyrpess, Texas native slotted the ball under into the net to extend the lead to 2-0.
Peschel's second tally of the season proved to be the match-winner as TAMUCC's Natalie Gonzalez put the ball into the upper right corner of the goal to cut the Bobcats' advantage in half.
Next up for Texas State is a home match on Sunday against Houston Baptist. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
