Texas State Signs Johnson to Contract Extension

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State men's basketball head coach Terrence Johnson has signed a contract extension through the 2026-27 season, Director of Athletics Don Coryell announced on Friday. Johnson has led the Bobcats to back-to-back Sun Belt Conference regular season championships in his two years leading the program.

"Coach Johnson is not only a great basketball coach but a tremendous leader of young men, and we are appreciative of his leadership as well as his commitment to and passion for Texas State," said Coryell. "Over the past two years, Coach Johnson has guided our teams to historic seasons. The program is on a great trajectory, and the seasons ahead are going to be fun to watch for all of Bobcat Nation."

Johnson is entering his third season as the head coach at Texas State and has compiled a 39-15 record, which is the best record by a Sun Belt team over the stretch. His win total is the most by a Bobcat coach in his first two years at the Division I level and second highest mark all-time.

"I am humbled and appreciate the opportunity to be a leader of men at this great institution," said Johnson. "Although we've had great success over the last two seasons, I still feel like there is more work to be done and we're building something special here. I'm truly thankful to President Trauth and Don for believing in me and committing to the long-term goals of the program. I'm excited to see what's in store for our program, university and community moving forward. It's a great day to be a Bobcat!"

The two-time Sun Belt Coach of the Year and NABC District 23 Coach of the Year led Texas State to its first ever trip to the NIT this past season. The 2021-22 team put together winning streaks of eight or more games twice during the campaign on the way to a 21-8 overall record with a 12-3 mark in conference play.

In each of Johnson's two seasons leading the Bobcats, Texas State has won 12 conference games. The Bobcats are the first Sun Belt team to have a .800 conference winning percentage or higher in back-to-back seasons in nine years.

Johnson arrived in San Marcos in 2015 as an assistant coach. He played an instrumental role in the development of guard Nijal Pearson, who left the program as the all-time leading scorer (2,122 points), the first All-American since the Bobcats transitioned to Division I, and the program's first Sun Belt Player of the Year. He also seen two Bobcats earn a total of four All-Sun Belt honors in his time as head coach.

Texas State, which returns nine letterwinners from last year's conference championship team, is currently in the middle of summer workouts.
