Trahan earns first career conference player of the week honor

NEW ORLEANS — Ciara Trahan continued the run of consecutive weekly Sun Belt Conference honors for the Texas State softball program as the freshman was selected as the league's player of the week, the conference announced Monday morning.

Monday's honor marked the fourth consecutive week at least one Bobcat softball student-athlete has been selected as either the conference's pitcher or player of the week. Trahan is the third different Texas State softball student-athlete to be named the league's player of the week, marking the most by any softball program in the league this season.

Trahan becomes the first Texas State softball freshman student-athlete to win a Sun Belt weekly award since Jessica Mullins was selected as the league's pitcher of the week on May 10, 2021. She's also the first Bobcat freshman student-athlete to win the league's player of the week honor since Ariel Ortiz on Feb. 9, 2015.

"To see the evolution of Ciara this has season has truly been remarkable," said Texas State softball head coach Ricci Woodard. "She's been one of our more consistent hitters right now and I can't wait to see what she does this week at the conference tournament."

In Texas State's three-game sweep at UTA last week, Trahan, who started all three contests in left field, led the Bobcats with a .636 batting average — seven hits in 11 plate appearances — to go along with three runs scored, two triples, three RBI and a team-high 11 total bases.

In the series-opening contest on Thursday, May 5, the Sante Fe, Texas native was credited with a career-high three hits in the Bobcats' five-inning win. She followed up that performance with back-to-back two-hit outings at the plate on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Trahan and the rest of the Texas State (35-17, 19-8) softball program will return to action on Wednesday, May 11, when the third-seeded Bobcats open their stay at the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Championships against the sixth-seeded App State at 4 p.m. CT.
