Wells Strikes Out 10 in Series Clinching Win

MONROE, La. – Right-hander Levi Wells struck out a career-high 10 as No. 17 Texas State (37-11, 19-4 Sun Belt) won 9-1 over ULM (15-29-1, 6-16-1 Sun Belt) Saturday at Warhawk Field. The win clinched the 11th series victory of the season.

Wells threw six scoreless innings and allowed only a hit and walk to improve to 6-1 on the season. Cole Cressend dropped to 3-5 as he surrendered three runs on five hits while striking out eight in seven innings.

Daylan Pena paced all players at the dish with a 3-for-5 day and four RBI. Also driving in two runs was Wesley Faison. Both Dalton Shuffield and Justin Thompson both came around to score twice on the afternoon.

The game was scoreless until the third when Cameron Gibbons and Shuffield both singled and Thompson drew a walk to load the bases. Facing a full count, Pena hit the offering just over the glove of the leaping third baseman for a bases clearing double.

It would not be until the seventh when either team scored again. This time it would be the Warhawks on an RBI single off the bat of Michelle Artzberger.

Both Shuffield and Thompson were walked to start off the eighth. Jose Gonzalez followed with an RBI double to right to put the Bobcats back in front by three. The runs kept coming as Pena drove in a run on a single, Faison doubled down the third base line to bring home two and Peyton Lewis plate a run on a ground out to the first baseman. Faison would later come home on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 9-1.

Closing out the game on the mound with a scoreless inning of work apiece was Nick Moore and Otto Wofford as they finished with two and one strikeouts, respectively.

The series concludes on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
