#17 Bobcats Complete Road Sweep of ULM

MONROE, La. – For the fourth time in Sun Belt Conference play, No. 17 Texas State (38-11, 20-4 Sun Belt) completed a road sweep with a 5-4 victory Sunday afternoon over ULM (15-30-1, 6-17-1 Sun Belt) at Warhawk Field.

Picking up the win was Austin Smith (2-0) as he worked a perfect inning out of the bullpen. Tristan Stivors struck out five over the final three innings to earn his 12th save of the year. Taking the loss was Nicholas Judice (2-1) after surrendering two runs on three walks in 2.2 innings of work.

Tony Robie recorded a career-high eight strikeouts in five innings while giving up a run on six hits.

At the plate, Wesley Faison, Cameron Gibbons and Peyton Lewis all finished with two hits each. Faison drove in two runs with one apiece coming off the bat of Jose Gonzalez and John Wuthrich.

Justin Thompson led off the second with a double to left. Two batters later, Wuthrich singled to plate the senior third baseman and give the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage.

The first three batters reached for the Warhawks in the fifth to load the bases. Robie was able to limit them to just one run that tied the game.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Gonzalez and Thompson were walked and ULM made a call to the bullpen. That call did not help as Daylan Pena got issued a free pass to load the bases. A 3-1 offering was smacked to left off Faison's bat to bring home two runs and put TXST back ahead. A wild pitch added the third run of the frame to make it a 4-1 advantage.

ULM quickly responded with a run in the next half inning on a home run by Mason Holt.

After Gibbons reached via a fielder's choice, Dalton Shuffield laid down a bunt single to put two on base. Gonzalez smacked a 1-1 offering past the first baseman for an RBI single to increase the lead back to three.

That run would be big as the Warhawks scored twice in the ninth on a single off the bat of Michelle Artzberger.

Next up for the Bobcats is the final home series of the season with Louisiana coming to town. The series opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday at Bobcat Ballpark.
