ATLANTA – Dalton Shuffield broke two career records in 13th-ranked Texas State's (43-11, 25-4 Sun Belt) 5-4 win Friday night over Georgia State (30-25, 15-14 Sun Belt) at the GSU Baseball Complex. The senior shortstop hit two doubles to become the program's leader in the category (53) and extra-base hits (84).
Â
"It is pretty cool breaking the records," said Shuffield. "It has been blessing to play for the Bobcats, Ty [Harrington], [Steven] Trout and all the rest. It has been absolutely fantastic, and I hope it doesn't come to an end fast."
Â
Picking up the win was
Levi Wells (7-1) as he struck out four in 6.1 innings while allowing three runs on eight hits.
Tristan Stivors earned his 17th save of the season after throwing a scoreless ninth. Suffering the loss was Mason Patel (2-3) after he surrendered four runs on seven hits while striking out five in 4.1 innings.
Â
Austin Smith worked a perfect inning of relief while
Cameron Bush recorded the final two outs in the seventh.
Â
Both
Jose Gonzalez and Shuffield finished the night with three hits. Gonzalez drove in three runs and Shuffield came around to score thrice. Also plating a run was
Cameron Gibbons and
Justin Thompson.
Â
The first hit of the game was single to left off the bat of Shuffield. After Gonzalez drew a walk,
Justin Thompson doubled down the left field line to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead after the first frame.
Â
With one gone in the third, Shuffield doubled to right to record his 52nd career double and become TXST's new all-time leader. A 2-2 offering saw Gonzalez send the ball over the wall down the right field line for his 10th homer of the season and increase the advantage to three.
Â
The Panthers got on the scoreboard in the third on a wild pitch.
Â
Shuffield recorded his second double of the game, this time a hard shot down the left field line that hit off the third baseman's glove. Two pitches later, Gonzalez laced a single to right to drive in the senior shortstop and make it a 4-1 contest.
Â
With one out in the sixth, GSU committed three consecutive errors that loaded the bases. Gibbons hit a slow grounder to second that brought home a run to increase it to a four-run Texas State lead.
Â
GSU would get back on the scoreboard in the seventh with three runs to make it a one-run contest.
Â
Smith would toss a 3-up, 3-down inning and Stivors closed out the game to wrap up the win and series victory.
Â
The series with the Panthers concludes on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. CT
