MONROE, La. — After Texas State took a one-run lead in the top of the fourth inning, ULM went on to score nine unanswered over the next three innings to upend the Bobcats, 10-2, in six innings.
Texas State (20-17, 6-8) appeared on its way to scoring first when
Hannah Earls singled to open the game, stole second then advanced to third on a wild pitch with only one out in the game's opening inning. But back-to-back outs left her in scoring position.
The push did come an inning later for the Bobcat offense, though, as
Caitlyn Rogers (catcher's inference),
Tori McCann (walk) and
Claire Ginder (single) loaded the bases with only one out. After a strikeout resulted in the inning's second out, Earls brought home Rogers when she reached via a fielder's choice. But, for the second straight inning, the Bobcats left runners in scoring position as a groundout to the pitcher ended the frame.
Despite allowing a one-out unearned run in the bottom of the frame, the Bobcat offense continued to show its fight as two innings later,
Ciara Trahan scored
Kylie George from third with a two-out single to push Texas State back in front by a one.
However, ULM (20-15, 6-8) responded with four two-out runs in the bottom of the fourth, an inning highlighted by a second two-run home run from Kennedy Johnson in as many days. The following inning, the Warhawks plated four more runs on four hits— three of which were run-scoring doubles — and two Bobcat errors.
ULM pushed its run total to double digits when Andie Edwards, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth, was hit by a
Kaitlyn Dutton pitch. Edwards advanced to second on a walk, then third on a groundout before ending the game when she scored on a one-out fielder's choice.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game weekend series on Sunday, April 10 at 12 p.m. CT.
