SAN MARCOS, TX — When the ball is rolling, the ball is rolling and Saturday afternoon, the ball was rolling in the right-centerfield gap at the end of Texas State's 2-1 win over Troy courtesy of
Caitlyn Rogers.
"That's just a team out there which is confident in right they're doing," said Texas State softball head coach
Ricci Woodard. "We played a really well opponent today. I thought (Jessica) Mullins pitched a really good game today, too."
After
Piper Randolph made a diving catch in left-centerfield for the second out in the top of the seventh to preserve a 1-1 game,
Jessica Mullins (22-11) set down Kelly Horne on the next pitch to send the bring the Texas State (31-17, 15-8) offense back to the plate.
Following a
Hannah Earls groundout,
Ciara Trahan, who scored the Bobcats' first run of the bottom of the third following her first career triple, sent a 1-1 pitch back up the middle for a one-out single to start the Bobcat rally.
Sara Vanderford advanced Trahan to second on a four-pitch walk.
Anna Jones appeared to have ended the game when she sent a 1-0 pitch to deep centerfield, but Troy's Jade Sinness made the catch while back pedaling near the warning track.
Rogers, who had been hit two by Libby Baker pitches throughout the game, blasted the very next pitch in the right-centerfield gap to bring home Trahan from second.
"Honestly, I was just trying to see a pitch I could drive," Rogers said. "I got hit (by a pitch) twice (today) and the other at bat, I didn't have a pitch I could really do anything with. So, I was really just looking for a pitch I could do something with."
Texas State will look to extend its active winning streak to 12 games when the Bobcats and Trojans square off on Sunday, May 1 at 12 p.m. CT. Following the game, Woodard and the Texas State softball program will honor the six Bobcat softball student-athletes:
Cat Crenek,
Kylie George,
Dani Elder,
Brooke Blackwell,
Samara Lagway and Rogers.
