STATESBORO, GA — The reigning Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week continued to pave the way for Texas State as
Jessica Mullins tossed her second consecutive seven-inning complete game shutout against a conference foe Friday night as the Bobcats beat Georgia Southern 2-0.
The win gives Texas State its longest winning streak — seven — of the season.
Since allowing two runs — one earned, one unearned — in the top of the second inning against Georgia State on Wednesday, April 14, Mullins has not allowed a run to score, a span of 23.1 consecutive innings. As a pitching staff, Texas State (27-17, 11-8) has not allowed a run over its last 39.1 straight innings.
Mullins (18-11), after allowing the unearned run to the Panthers last week, has gone on to scatter just eight hits, struck out 21 batters and issued only three walks in her last 23.1 innings.
Mullins opened Friday night's action at Georgia Southern (9-27, 4-12) by retiring the first three batters in order. She was given a one-run lead the following inning when
Tori McCann capped a three-hit-in-three-plate-appearance streak for the Bobcats when a run-scoring hit to plate
Piper Randolph from third.
Sara Vanderford and
Anna Jones teamed up to extend the Texas State lead the following inning after Vanderford sent the first pitch of the third inning to right-centerfield. She advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jones.
Georgia Southern, in the bottom half of the third inning, collected its second — and final — hit of the game with a one-out infield single. The Eagles' first hit came the previous inning with a leadoff single.
Mullins went on to retire the next 14 Georgia Southern consecutive batters to end the contest. It was the sophomore's second 14-consecutive-batter-retired streak in as many conference games as she accomplished the feat from the third and seventh innings against Georgia State on Saturday, April 16, 2022.
Texas State will go its second straight Sun Belt Conference series win when the Bobcats and Eagles tangle, again, on Saturday, April 23 at 2 p.m. CT.
