SAN MARCOS, TX — Texas State and Louisiana's softball programs seem to always find themselves near the top of the Sun Belt Conference. And 2022 is no different.
This weekend, Texas State (18-13, 5-4) will host Louisiana (21-8, 7-2) for the first time since March 8-10, 2019, a span of 1,119 days. The Ragin' Cajuns currently sit second in the conference standings, behind South Alabama, which has an .833 winning percentage. The Bobcats are fifth by virtue of a tiebreaker — the Mountaineers took the season series in March — with App State as both softball programs sport 5-4 records.
All three games — Friday (6 p.m. CT), Saturday (2 p.m. CT) and Sunday (12 p.m. CT) — this weekend can be viewed on ESPN+.
The two programs met four times throughout the 2021 season with Texas State winning the first game, 5-1, on April 17, 2021, in Lafayette, La., before the Ragin' Cajuns went on to win the next three, including a conference tournament contest.
INSIDE THE SERIES: Louisiana
Louisiana holds a 41-7 advantage in the all-time series with the Bobcats having won only two of the 10 games played in San Marcos, Texas. Texas State will be looking for its first win over the Ragin' Cajuns at home since winning, 2-1, in eight innings on April 15, 2017. The last time TXST beat Louisiana in seven innings in San Marcos was March 28, 2015, when the Bobcats won 14-13.
Not including a 2020 season that was canceled in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Louisiana and Texas State have met at least four times every season since 2016.
Since 1994*, Texas State is 4-9 all time against Louisiana during the month of April. *Dates not available for three 1986 meetings or 1988 and 1989 games.
This weekend's three-game series will mark the first time since March 29-30, 2014, that Texas State has played an unranked Louisiana softball program during the regular season.
Since joining the Sun Belt Conference prior to the start of the 2014 softball, Texas State is 3-4 against Louisiana in the first game of a regular-season conference series.
