Softball returns to College Station for first time in two seasons

Texas State set to square off against SEC foe Texas A&M on Wednesday night

SAN MARCOS, TX — The Texas State softball program will continue its zigzagging through its non-conference schedule when the Bobcats travel to College Station to play Texas A&M on Wednesday, March 9 at 6 p.m. CT.

Texas State (11-6) are coming off a four-win weekend in the Wildcat Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona. The lone loss for the Bobcats last weekend was a heart-breaking, one-run loss to then-No. 9 Arizona, which ended the game in the bottom of the seventh on a one-out single to right-centerfield.

WHO TO WATCH: Cat Crenek, Sr., C

If Cat Crenek has appeared in a game during the 2022 season, the left-hander has gotten at least one hit at the dish. In eight games played, Crenek has 14 hits in 27 plate appearances. Since being inserted into the starting lineup against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday, March 2, Crenek is hitting .473 (9-19) with four RBI, four runs scored, three walks and a double. She has stolen four bases, including a pair against then-No. 9 Arizona on Saturday, March 5. Defensively, Crenek has thrown out three would-be base stealers since the beginning of March, including a pair against Loyola Chicago on March 4.

INSIDE THE SERIES: Texas A&M

The last time these two softball programs met on the diamond, Texas State ended the game in the bottom of the seventh on a double from Sara Vanderford that plated Kylie George and gave the Bobcats a 7-6 win on April 6, 2021. The win pushed Texas State's then-winning streak to 18 straight, tying the program mark. It was also the first time in program history the Bobcats, playing as a ranked team, beat another ranked team at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos, Texas.

In games against Texas A&M played in College Station, Texas State is 4-38. Overall, the Bobcats trail the Aggies, 11-65, in the all-time series.

WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Kylie George played 91 career games as a member of the Texas A&M Aggie softball program as a freshman (2018) and sophomore (2019) before transferring to Texas State. Of those 91 games played, George started 28 games, all coming as a sophomore in 2019. Dani Elder concluded a four-year career as an Aggie following the 2021 season. She started 77 of her 94 career games and appeared in last season's matchup between Texas State and Texas A&M on April 6, 2021, when she had a hit, walk and run scored in three plate appearances.

TWO YEARS SINCE …

Wednesday night's game will mark the first trip to College Station, Texas for the Texas State softball program since Wednesday, March 11, 2020. Just an hour after the Aggies withstood the Bearcats' seventh-inning rally to seal a 2-1 win, news began to circulate social media of a virus that eventually forced the cancelation of a NBA game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Utah Jazz. Throughout the following day, the NHL, MLB and MLS halted play. The NCAA eventually decided to cancel the remainder the winter and spring sport seasons as a result of the COVID-19 virus.
