Baseball Battled #1 Longhorns in Front of Record Crowd

SAN MARCOS, Texas – In front of a record crowd of 3,283 at Bobcat Ballpark, No. 17 Texas State (10-3) battled to a 9-8 loss Tuesday night to No. 1 ranked Texas (12-1).

Both Wesley Faison and Justin Thompson led the Bobcats with two hits and two runs. Five of the Bobcats' run came off the bat of Daylan Pena with four being on a grand slam. Also driving in a run was Cameron Gibbons and John Wuthrich.

Suffering the loss was Trevis Sundgren (1-1) as he struck out one in 3.1 innings but allowed seven runs on eight hits. Coy Cobb (1-0) picked up the win after recording the final two outs in the fifth inning. Aaron Nixon earned his third save after getting the final four outs.

Cameron Bush had a stellar outing out of the bullpen. He tossed four scoreless innings and struck out five including the side in the seventh. Tristan Stivors came on and recorded two strikeouts while holding UT off the board in the ninth.

The Longhorns struck first with two runs in the second and one in third.

Wuthrich led off the bottom of the third with a homer down the left field line to put TXST on the scoreboard. Jose Gonzalez followed with a single to right and Dalton Shuffield drew a walk. Faison laced a 1-0 offering to left field that saw Gonzalez score when the outfield misplayed the ball. After Thompson was plunked to load the bases, Pena blasted the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for his first career grand slam to put the Bobcats ahead 6-3.

The lead was short lived as UT put up a six-spot of its own in the top of the fourth.

Gibbons chipped away at the deficit with an RBI single in the fifth. Another run was scored in the seventh on a groundout off the bat of Pena.

The Bobcats had a chance for a walk-off victory in the ninth when three walks loaded the bases. However, Nixon was able to get a strikeout to end the game.

Next up is the rematch with the Longhorns on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field and the game will air on the Longhorn Network.
