TUCSON, Ariz. – The Texas State baseball team (9-2) held 11th-ranked Arizona (9-2) scoreless for the first six innings on the way to a 6-2 victory Saturday night at Hi Corbett Field.
Â
Levi Wells (1-0) threw five shutout innings and struck out a career-high eight batters to earn the win.
Tristan Stivors picked up his third save of the season by striking out six in three scoreless frames. Taking the loss was Garret Irvin (1-1) as he allowed four runs on five hits and four walks in 5.2 innings.
Â
At the plate,
Isaiah Ortega-Jones finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored a run.
John Wuthrich scored twice and had two base knocks including his team leading sixth double. Both
Peyton Lewis and
Ben McClain hit a triple apiece.
Â
With one out in the first, Wuthrich hit a hard shot that ricocheted off the third baseman nearly all the way towards the second baseman to reach base. He advanced to within 90 feet of scoring after swiping second and moving up on a wild pitch. Following a walk drawn by
Jose Gonzalez, Shuffield hit a slow grounder to the second baseman. His only play was to first which brought home Wuthrich for the first run of the game.
Â
The fifth began with Ortega-Jones lining the first pitch to center for a single. McClain followed with a deep shot to center that saw the centerfield making a diving attempt but miss. That allowed the junior to slide into third for an RBI triple. He would come home a couple pitches later a wild pitch to increase the lead to 3-0.
Â
Ortega-Jones added to the Bobcats total with a two-out RBI single through the left side in the sixth.
Â
The Wildcats got on the board in the seventh with a two-run single by Tanner O'Tremba.
Â
A shot down the first base line ended with Lewis standing on third for his first career triple. He would just beat the tag on a lineout to right field for an insurance run as TXST went ahead 5-2.
Â
Wuthrich sent the first pitch of the ninth down the third base line for a double. Shuffield beat out an infield single to the third baseman that put runners on the corners with one gone.
Wesley Faison hit a grounder that to third that brought Wuthrich home for an insurance run.
Â
Stivors shut the door with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
Â
Next up is the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
