Miscues Costly Against #11 Wildcats

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Texas State baseball team (8-2) committed multiple miscues Friday night that proved to be costly in a 7-2 loss to 11-ranked Arizona (9-1) at Hi Corbett Field.

Zeke Wood (1-1) struck out six in four innings but allowed five runs on four hits and three walks to suffer his first loss of the season. TJ Nichols (2-0) surrendered a run on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts to earn the win.

Both Austin Smith and Otto Wofford had two strikeouts out of the bullpen. Jonathan Martinez retired all three batters he faced in his inning of work.

John Wuthrich finished with two doubles and plated a run. Also driving in a run was Dalton Shuffield, who finished 2-for-4 and hit his eighth career triple. Finishing the night with a single apiece were Isaiah Ortega-Jones and Wesley Faison.

Wood struck out four batters in the first, however the Wildcats scored twice on a double by Tanner O'Tremba.

After Ben McClain reached on a fielder's choice, Wuthrich sent the next pitch down the left field line just out of the reach of the diving third baseman for an RBI double to cut the deficit in half. Arizona got a run back on another O'Tremba double to make it 3-1 after three frames.

Walks and a couple of TXST miscues allowed the Wildcats to tally three runs in the fifth to increase their advantage to five runs. UA added another run to their total in the seventh to take a six-run lead.

Following a one out double off the right field wall by Wuthrich in the eighth. Shuffield hit the ball down the right field line that just landed fair. The senior shortstop turned it into a triple to make it a 7-2 game.

The series continues Saturday with first pitch slated for 7 p.m. CT.
