SAN MARCOS, Texas – Trailing entering the bottom of the ninth, Texas State (19-5, 4-1 Sun Belt) scored five runs but it wasn't enough as Coastal Carolina (13-8-1, 2-2-1 Sun Belt) evened the series with a 7-5 win Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.
Â
Taking the loss was
Levi Wells (3-1) as he went six innings with five strikeouts but surrendered two runs on four walks and three hits. Reid VanScoter (4-1) earned the win as he struck out nine in 7.2 scoreless innings while giving up just two hits. Colin Yablonski earned his first save of the season after getting the final two outs in the ninth.
Â
Cameron Bush struck out three in his two innings out of the bullpen.
Peyton Zabel threw an inning and recorded a strikeout.
Â
Recording two of the Bobcats' five hits on the day was
Dalton Shuffield that included his 41st career double.
Cameron Gibbons also had a double and drove in two runs.
Â
The Chanticleers scored twice in the first and held the advantage until the eighth when they added three runs. Two more runs were added in the ninth to go up 7-0.
Â
With one gone in the bottom of the ninth, Shuffield singled to right and
Justin Thompson was able to work a walk. The first pitch to
Jose Gonzalez was laced through the right side to put TXST on the scoreboard and put runners on the corners.
Â
A deep fly to right center was hit by
Wesley Faison that saw the center fielder misplay the ball that plated another run and allow two Bobcats to get into scoring position. After
August Ramirez was plunked, Gibbons hit a two RBI double down the left field line to cut the deficit to three.
Â
Following CCU's second pitching change of the frame,
Isaiah Ortega-Jones hit a hot shot to the shortstop. The Chanticleer infielder went to third to get Gibbons but the throw got by the third baseman that put Bobcats on the corners and brought home the fifth run of the inning.
Â
Ortega-Jones would steal second to put the tying run into scoring position. However, two fly outs were induced to stifle the rally.
Â
The rubber game between the teams is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
