JONESBORO, Ark. – No. 15 Texas State (18-3, 3-0 Sun Belt) scored three runs over the last two innings for the 5-4 comeback victory over Arkansas State (4-13, 0-3 Sun Belt) to complete the series sweep. It is the third series sweep of the season and extended the Bobcats' winning streak to eight games.
Â
Tristan Stivors (2-0) pitched the final two innings, striking out two and not allowing a run, to earn the win. Kevin Wiseman (0-1) took the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the ninth.
Â
Starting on the rubber was
Tony Robie, who struck out two but allowed four runs on three hits and walks in three innings.
Cameron Bush recorded four strikeouts in three scoreless innings of relief.
Austin Smith struck out the lone batter he faced and
Matthew Nicholas got two outs with one via the strikeout.
Â
Daylan Pena scored twice and had two hits on the afternoon.
Dalton Shuffield drove in three of the Bobcats' runs on two hits including his fifth homer of the season. Also finishing with two bases knocks was
August Ramirez.
Â
For the first time in the series TXST got on the scoreboard first with an RBI single by
Jose Gonzalez through the right side of the infield.
Â
The Red Wolves quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead on a two-run home run from Jared Toler.
Â
Pena laced a double down the left field line and would move to third on a wild pitch in the third. A 2-0 offering was laced past the third baseman by Shuffield for an RBI double to tie the game 2-2.
Â
Again, ASU answered in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single off the bat of Daedrick Cail to go back in front. A TXST error on the next pitch allowed another run to score to increase the deficit two.
Â
Pena led off the eighth with a single to center. Two batters later, Shuffield smashed a home run down the left field line to tie the game.
Â
The ninth began with
Cameron Gibbons singling to center. He would get all the way to third as a throw from the pitcher on a pickoff attempt was off the mark.
Isaiah Ortega-Jones would double down the right field line to plate Gibbons and give Texas State the lead.
Â
Eli Davis led off the bottom of the frame with a double and got within 90 feet of tying the game on a sacrifice bunt. Stivors got a strikeout and induced a pop up to himself to wrap up the sweep.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a trip to San Antonio to take on Incarnate Word on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
