JONESBORO, Ark. – A low-scoring affair saw Texas State (17-3, 2-0 Sun Belt) come out on top 2-1 over Arkansas State (4-12, 0-2 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium. The victory clinched the fifth consecutive weekend series for the Bobcats.
Â
Levi Wells (3-0) struck out six and allowed just one run on four hits in 5.2 innings to pick up the win.
Tristan Stivors earned his fifth save of the season and the 14th of his career after getting the final six outs. Will Nash (1-1) was credited with the loss as he surrendered two runs on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings.
Â
Tossing an inning of relief with a strikeout was
Carson Keithley while
Matthew Nicholas retired the lone batter he faced.
Â
Peyton Lewis went 2-for-4 at the plate. Driving in a run apiece was
Wesley Faison and
Dalton Shuffield. Four doubles were hit by TXST batters with them coming off the bats of
Jose Gonzalez,
Isaiah Ortega-Jones,
Daylan Pena and Shuffield.
Â
An RBI single by the Red Wolves' Cason Tollett gave the home team a 1-0 lead in the second.
Â
Ortega-Jones led off the next half inning with a double to left center. After back-to-back strikeouts, Shuffield smashed an RBI double, also to left center, to tie the game. The Bobcats took the lead 2-1 when Faison laced a single back up the middle.
Â
ASU threatened in the sixth when they got two on with two out. A call to the bullpen saw Nicholas come on and induce an inning-ending pop up to Pena.
Â
The Red Wolves again had an opportunity to tie the game in the eighth. Eli Davis led off with a single and advanced all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt. Stivors induced a groundout back to him and another one to Shuffield to end the inning without any damage done.
Â
Next up is the series finale in Jonesboro with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
