SAN MARCOS, TX — The non-conference portion of Texas State's 2022 softball schedule is zooming by as quickly as
Piper Randolph,
Kylie George,
Ciara Trahan and
Hannah Earls do around the base paths.
Wednesday's mid-week contest against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which begins at 5 p.m. inside Bobcat Stadium, will mark the 12th contest for the Bobcats so far this season and fourth since Sunday, Feb. 27.
WHO TO WATCH: Presley Glende, Fr., P
When
Presley Glende has been summoned out of the bullpen, the true freshman has shown flashed on dominance. Against No. 1 Oklahoma, the Kirbyville native put down the Sooners in order an inning after snapping their consecutive innings scored streak on Sunday, Feb. 20. She even recorded her first career collegiate strikeout against the nation's top softball squad. Just two days ago, she tossed a career-long four innings against Tulsa and walked only one and struck out another. Every outing has gotten better and better for Glende and Wednesday afternoon should be no exception.
INSIDE THE SERIES: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
When the two programs linked up during the 2021 season,
Jessica Mullins earned her seventh win on the season as Texas State won, 2-0. But more importantly, the Bobcats' shutout win over the Islanders was the 700th of head coach
Ricci Woodard's career. Since that day — March 16, 2021 — Woodard's Bobcats have gone on to add 30 more wins to her career total.
Except for the 2018 and 2019 seasons, the two programs have met at least once in every season since the series' first meeting on Feb. 4, 2000.
A win over the Islanders on Wednesday would be the 20th over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for Texas State in San Marcos since the series began.
MULLING INTO FORM
Since allowing two earned runs in a single inning of work against the top-ranked team in the country, Oklahoma, sophomore right-handed pitcher
Jessica Mullins has bounced back into the form that resulted in her earning NFCA All-Central Second Team honors in 2021. Against Houston on Sunday, Feb. 20, Mullins scattered three hits and struck out three in four innings of out. She followed that outing with her first career complete game shutout against a ranked opponent when she struck out seven in seven innings against then-No. 22 Arizona State. In a six-inning stint against then-No. 23 Texas earlier this week, Mullins allowed just one earned run, while striking out seven. Over her last 21.2 innings, Mullins has allowed just three earned runs and struck out 24 batters.
FIRST TIME SINCE …
Wednesday afternoon's one-off contest against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will make the first "set" of games for Texas State without playing a ranked opponent since its season-opening three-game set at New Mexico State. Since then, the Bobcats have played a mid-week against then-No. 12 Oregon, No. 1 Oklahoma during a four-game set at Houston before playing then-No. 22 Arizona State and then-No. 23 Texas at last weekend's Texas Classic. Wednesday's "set" will be short lived, though, as the Bobcats play No. 9 Arizona during a five-game slate in Tucson, Arizona this weekend.
