SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State (8-1) won its sixth consecutive game Thursday night 7-3 over UTRGV (5-3) at Bobcat Ballpark. The Bobcats are off to their best start since the 1991 team began the year 11-1.

Cameron Bush (1-1) earned the win after throwing a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts. Taking the loss was starter Deryk Serbantez (0-1) as he only recorded one out and allowed the first three Bobcat runs.

Getting the start for Texas State was
Trevis Sundgren, who went 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and surrendered two runs on three hits. Tossing scoreless innings out of the bullpen was
Carson Keithley,
Matthew Nicholas and
Tristan Stivors. Also working one frame was
Jonathan Martinez.

Dalton Shuffield went 3-for-4 at the plate, falling a triple shy of the cycle, drove in three runs and scored twice. Recording two base knocks apiece was
Justin Thompson and
John Wuthrich.

First time at the plate for the Bobcats saw Wuthrich get plunked. He would move into scoring position when he stole second and advanced to third on a bad throw. The senior came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of
Jose Gonzalez, who reached second when the catcher misplayed the ball to the plate.

Shuffield followed with an RBI double to left center and would later advance to third on a bad throw on a pickoff attempt. After
Wesley Faison was walked, Shuffield scored on a sacrifice fly from Thompson to increase the advantage to 3-0 at the end of the first frame.

Another TXST run came in third when Faison beat out a grounder on a near inning-ending double play. Gonzalez made a wide turn at third and the throw to the third baseman was misplayed to allow him to score.

UTRGV tallied two runs in the next half inning with both coming home on a single off the bat of Alex Kelch. In the fifth, the Vaqueros scored another run after the Bobcats committed two errors on a play.

Wuthrich led off the seventh with a single to left center. Two batters later, Shuffield blasted a 1-0 pitch over the left centerfield wall for his third home run of the season.
Peyton Lewis plated another run later in the frame on a sacrifice fly for the final run of the game.

Next up is the first road series of the season for TXST with a trip to take on No. 11 Arizona. First pitch is schedule for 7 p.m. CT.
