SAN MARCOS, Texas – A record-setting coach and former star running back coming out of Texas high school football, Kam Martin has been named the new Texas State running backs coach, head coach
G.J. Kinne announced on Monday.
Martin joins the Bobcats after a 2022 season in which he helped Incarnate Word set the program's rushing record and put up the nation's top scoring offense. He joined UIW with experience at UCF following his playing career at Auburn.
"Kam is another great addition to Texas State and our coaching staff," said Kinne. "He is Texas high school legend and great role model for our student-athletes. He knows the running back position because he played it at a high level and is a rising star in the profession."
In 2022, Martin guided a running backs group that helped the Cardinals total more than 3,000 yards on the ground. All-Southland performer Marcus Cooper led the way with 1,436 yards – which were the fifth-most in the FCS – while two other running backs, Jarrell Wiley and Isaiah Robinson, had more than 300 yards each.
The 3,022 team rushing yards by the Cardinals were a program record and marked the first time a group had gone over 2,000 rushing yards in a single season.
UIW also won the Southland Conference championship for the second year in a row and reached the FCS Playoff Semifinals for the first time in school history.
Martin went to UIW after a one-year stint at UCF where he was a recruiting and offensive assistant under then-co-offensive coordinator Kinne. With the help of Martin, the Knights had two rushers with more than 700 yards and went on to win the United Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl against Florida.
Prior to his coaching career, Martin was a top-25 national recruit out of Port Arthur Memorial High School (TX) and four-year letterwinner at Auburn under then-head coach Gus Malzahn. With the Tigers, Martin had more than 1,700 all-purpose career yards and earned All-SEC honors.
In high school, Martin was also a track athlete and anchored the 4x200 meter relay team that set a national record with a time of 1:23.84 and won the 2015 Texas Class 6A state title.
Martin is the fourth assistant coach named by newly-minted head coach Kinne and third on the offensive side.
Mack Leftwich and
Jordan Shoemaker were announced as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach/run game coordinator, respectively, on Dec. 13.
Kinne was named the 21st head coach in Texas State football history on Dec. 2.
