Bobcats Overcome Second Half Deficit to Down Cajuns

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball team (11-4, 2-1 Sun Belt) overcame a 13-point deficit with just under 12 and a half minutes to go in the game to defeat Louisiana (8-7, 3-2 Sun Belt) 72-68 Saturday afternoon in Strahan Arena.

Following a Nighael Ceaser free throw at the 15:47 mark, the Ragin' Cajuns went on an 11-2 run to take a 49-37 advantage. Shelby Adams knocked down a three-pointer that was the start of 12 consecutive points for the Bobcats. In that span, Caleb Asberry netted seven points on three straight baskets that included a steal and reverse dunk.

Back-to-back buckets by Asberry and Ceaser tied the game again with a little under five minutes to play. Following two free throws by the visitors, Isiah Small and Asberry converted two charity stripe attempts apiece. A put back slam by Ceaser gave TXST a four-point advantage with 1:43 left on the clock.

The Cajuns could only get as close as two the rest of the way while two free throws courtesy of Mason Harrell sealed the game.

In the first half, the Bobcats took their largest lead of the game at 15-8 following a three-pointer from Tyrel Morgan. A floater in the pain with half a minute to go in the period by Harrell was the final points of the half and sent the game into the break tied at 32.

Asberry scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting with three triples. He also recorded five rebounds, three assists, three steals and matched his career best of two blocks. Harrell added 16 points, 12 of which came in the first half, in his 100th career game and Shelby Adams netted 11 points while grabbing six rebounds, dishing out three assists and posting three steals.

Texas State shot 44.2% (23-of-52) from the field, went 8-for-16 from beyond the arc and converted 18-of-22 (81.8%) at the free throw line. Despite allowing the Cajuns to make 47.2% (25-of-53) of their shot attempts, the Bobcats held them to 7-of-16 shooting over the last 12:24 of the game with no made three-pointers.

Next up for TXST is the start of three consecutive games on the road. First up is a trip to Little Rock with tip scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
