ABILENE, Texas – With a little under three and a half minutes left on the clock in the second half,
Addison Gaetano headed home a corner kick as Texas State (2-2-1) claimed a 1-0 victory at Abilene Christian (1-3-0) Sunday afternoon at Elmar Gray Field.
Â
The Bobcats won a corner kick early in the 87th minute that was knocked out by a Wildcat defender for another corner kick opportunity.
Alyssa Price's second corner attempt went into the six-yard box and saw Gaetano redirect the ball into the bottom left corner for her first career goal.
Â
Both teams placed two shots on goal while ACU held an 8-5 advantage in overall shots in the first half.
Â
The first great opportunity for TXST in the second half came when
Mya Ulloa laid off a perfect pass to put
Kiara Gonzales behind the backline in the 56th minute. The shot by the junior saw the goalkeeper get her hand on the ball at the last second to knock the ball away from frame.
Â
In the 83rd minute, both
Trinity Clark and
Madison Humphrey had excellent shot attempts. Clark's shot was a hard rip that was blocked by a defender in the six-yard box while Humphrey's attempt was on frame but caught by the keeper.
Â
Beth Agee made six saves with four stops coming in the final 45 minutes. The shutout was the first of her career.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is their home opener against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. It will also be the program's sixth annual Teal Match to raise awareness for ovarian cancer as well as funds for women fighting the cancer.
