Bobcats Claim 4-0 Win in Annual Teal Match

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State soccer team (3-2-1) capped off its non-conference schedule and the sixth annual Teal Match with a 4-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (2-4-1) Sunday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. It was also the Bobcats' season opener, the latest in program history.

Multiple chances at finding the back of the net in the first half for the Bobcats began just over four minutes into the contest when Bailey Peschel sent a low shot that went slightly wide of the left post.

Halfway through the 11th minute, Peschel placed a perfect ball into the six-yard box from the top left corner of the penalty box. Kiara Gonzales was able to get her head on the ball but it ricocheted off the crossbar and back into play.

Peschel followed with another excellent cross in the 16th minute. Madison Humphrey was there to get her head on the ball but was slightly tipped by the goalkeeper off the crossbar. Mya Ulloa was there for a wheel kick attempt that was tipped over for a corner kick.

A corner kick by Haley Shaw was played short to Anna Dunch in the 25th minute. The freshman's ball into the box was headed just wide of the right post by Addison Gaetano.

The best chance for TAMUCC in the first half came three minutes later. A through ball allowed Morgan Westbury to get behind the TXST backline. Beth Agee came off her line to slide and corral the ball before the Islander was able to get to her foot on it.

With exactly 10 minutes left in the first half, the Bobcats got their breakthrough goal. Hannah Solano was able to cut in from the right side and send in a cross to Haley Shaw. The sophomore midfielder passed back to Ally Kewish, who was about 20 yards out from goal. She sent a one-timer high at of the reach of the keeper and into the upper portion of the net for her first goal of the season.

A corner kick taken by Solano went past everybody and chased down by Kamaria Williams. A short pass to Shaw saw the sophomore send the ball to the six-yard box where Olivia Wright was able to chest it down and into the back of the net to increase the advantage to 2-0 with a little under two minutes left in the first half.

Mya Ulloa was fouled nearly a minute into the second half to give Texas State a dangerous free kick from the far side about 25 yards from goal. Williams stepped up and sent the ball in and Gonzales cut in front of teammate Karlee Torisk to head it home to make it a 3-0 contest.

In the 53rd minute, Gonzales sent a through ball in that Ulla ran on to with no defender around her. She slotted her shot into the bottom right portion of the goal to increase the TXST's lead to 4-0.

The best look on frame in the half for the Islanders came with just under eight minutes to play when Reagan Sharer flicked on a free kick to the right post. Agee made a diving stop to keep the visitors off the scoreboard and preserve the shutout.

TXST totaled 28 shots while holding TAMUCC to just eight attempts. The Bobcats' shot total is the most in a match since attempting 30 against ULM on Sept. 14, 2018, also a 4-0 victory for Texas State. Of the 14 different Bobcats to take a shot, Ulloa led the way with five attempts while both Gonzales and Humphrey had four apiece.

Both Shaw and Williams' two assists are tied for the third most in a match in program history. The last Texas State player to have a multi-assist contest was Solano at ULM on Oct. 4, 2019. It is also the first time that two Bobcats had at least two assists in a match since Sept. 4, 2015 against the Islanders on the road.

In goal, Agee made two saves with both coming in the final 45 minutes for her second straight shutout. She now has 112 in her career to tie Paige Perriraz (2005-06) for eighth in program history.

Next up for the Bobcats is Coastal Carolina on Thursday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. The Sun Belt Conference opener takes place at the Bobcat Soccer Complex and will be streamed on ESPN+.
