Texas Tech upends Bobcats to open Red Raider Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas — The opening night of the Red Raider Classic was not kind to the Texas State volleyball program as the host school Texas Tech upended the Bobcats in four sets Friday night.

The first set saw back-and-forth action early, until Janell Fitzgerald converted a Kayla Granado set into a kill that pushed Texas State (0-4) ahead 15-14. Tyeranee Scott and Lauren Teske combined on a block moments later to make it a two-point set. Texas Tech (4-1) attempted another rally, but the Bobcats went on to score nine of the set's next 14 points to win the set.

With the score tied 16-16, it was a late 9-3 scoring run from Texas Tech that clinched the second set for the Red Raiders.  Texas Tech carried that second-set momentum over into the third set as the Red Raiders used a 19-11 run to break a 6-6 tie and claim a 2-1 match lead. Much like the third set, Texas Tech broke a 6-6 tie by going on another 19-11 run to seal the victory.
