SAN ANTONIO – Trailing at halftime, the Texas State soccer team (1-0-0) netted two second half goals to claim a season opening victory over Incarnate Word (0-1-0) Friday night at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.

The Cardinals tallied the first goal of the match earlier in the third minute when Sierra Wannamaker chipped the ball into the upper portion of the net from just inside the 18-yard box.

Olivia Wright drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box. The free kick was taken by
Bailey Peschel with her shot attempt hitting the bottom of the crossbar and ricocheting down and back into the field of play.

Wright had a shot attempt late in the 71st minute get blocked but
Madison Humphrey was there to knock home the rebound to tie the match 1-1.

Driving down the right side,
Kiara Gonzales crossed the ball into the middle to
Trinity Clark. The sophomore got just enough on the ball to send it into the right bottom corner for the go-ahead goal in the middle of the 87th minute.

The Bobcats held off a late charge by the Cardinals that saw them put a header on frame that was right at
Beth Agee.

Texas State held a slim 15-14 shot advantage with two attempts apiece coming from Gonzales, Humphrey, Peschel and Wright.

Agee tallied six saves in between the posts.
