CONWAY, S.C. – A throwing error in the ninth proved costly for Texas State as Coastal Carolina went on to win 8-7 in 10 innings Friday evening at Springs Brooks Stadium.
With the loss, the Bobcats are now 21-33 on the season and 9-14 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Chanticleers improve to 25-23 overall and 8-12 in conference play.
Â
Tristan Stivors (2-3) took the loss as he allowed the game-winning run while recording three strikeouts. Alaska Abney (3-2) got the win after going four innings with seven strikeouts while giving up just a run on three walks and two hits.
Zeke Wood started on the mound and went four innings and struck out five while surrendering two runs on five hits.
Cameron Bush saw action for 2.1 innings and
Otto Wofford tossed 1.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Austin Smith got the lone batter he faced out.
Â
Recording two base knocks apiece was
Jose Gonzalez,
Will Hollis and
Jaxon Williams. Both of Hollis' hits were doubles to give him 33 in his Bobcat career and move him into a tie for 14 in program history. Gonzalez finished with three RBI.
Â
Williams drew a leadoff walk to start the game. Gonzalez followed by cranking a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall for a 2-run home run, his second in as many games.
Â
In the second,
Bryce Bonner was issued a free pass and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A single off the pitcher by
Cameron Gibbons put runners on the corners. Following a pitching change, a wide pickoff attempt got past the first baseman allowed Bonner to score and Gibbons to advance all the way to third to increase the Bobcats' lead to 3-0.
Â
Hollis started off the third with a double to right center. After he moved to third on a groundout, the senior outfielder scored on a single through the right side by
Cole Coffey to increase the lead to four runs.
Â
The Chanticleers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame with two runs to cut TXST's advantage in half.
Â
CCU plated three runs in the sixth to take the lead 5-4.
Â
The lead was short lived as Gibbons was plunked to start off the seventh and Williams followed with a single back up the middle to put runners on the corners. Gonzalez hit a hard shot that saw the shortstop leap and see the ball go in and out of his glove that allowed a run to score. Hollis would then lace an RBI double just past the reach of the first baseman to plate the second run of the frame and put the Bobcats back in front by a run.
Â
In the eighth,
Ben McClain drew a leadoff walk and was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. An infield single back up the middle saw Williams reach and the throw from the second baseman to first was off target that allowed Williams to score and increase the lead to 7-5.
Â
The Chants plated a run in the ninth and Stivors was called upon out of the bullpen with one gone. He would strikeout out the first batter he faced. The junior right-hander also got the next batter swinging on a pitch in the dirt, however the throw to first was off the mark and allowed the game-tying run to score to send the game to extra innings.
Â
CCU would load the bases in the 10th with three consecutive hits including two via bunts. A 1-1 pitch was hit hard to a leaping
Dalton Shuffield but hit off his glove for a walk-off single.
Â
The series concludes on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
