CONWAY, S.C. – All of Texas State's runs in the series opener Thursday night came off home runs by
Jose Gonzalez and
Ben McClain Thursday night at Springs Brooks Stadium. Coastal Carolina ended up taking the game 10-5.
Â
With the setback, the Bobcats drop to 21-32 overall and 9-13 in the Sun Belt conference while the Chanticleers are now 24-23 on the year and 7-12 in conference play.
Â
Suffering the loss was
Zachary Leigh (4-7) after surrendering four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four in 2.2 innings. Teddy Sharkey (4-1) was credited with the win as he threw two scoreless frames with two strikeouts in relief.
Â
Also seeing action on the mound for TXST was
Jonathan Martinez and
Trevis Sundgren. Martinez threw a career-high three innings and struck out two. Sundgren tossed 2.1 innings of relief and recorded a strikeout.
Â
Both
Jaxon Williams and Gonzalez had two hits apiece. As a team, the Bobcats scattered 11 hits on the night.
Tucker Redden swiped his third base of the season as well.
Â
The Chanticleers threatened in the first when the first three batters reached via two walks and a single. Leigh got out of the jam by striking out the next three.
Â
In the second, Williams singled and moved to third on a single by Redden. The senior catcher then swiped second to put two in scoring position. However, a flyout to left ended the frame and kept the Bobcats off the scoreboard.
Â
CCU struck first when Eric Brown hit a solo home run to center field to lead off the bottom of the second.
Â
Dalton Shuffield led off the third with a bunt single and
Will Hollis followed by drawing a walk. After a pickoff, that came on a missed balk call, and strikeout, Gonzalez smoked a 2-2 offering over the left field wall to put TXST ahead 2-1.
Â
The next half inning saw the Chanticleers answer back with three runs to take a 2-run advantage. Their lead would be extended to three, 5-2, when they scored another run in the fourth.
Â
CCU would tack on three more runs in the sixth and two in the eighth to wrap up its scoring.
Â
In the ninth,
Wesley Faison pinch hit and hit a high fly ball to left field that was dropped by the outfielder. After
Johnny Gonzales hit a see-eye single through the right side, McClain cranked an 0-1 pitch to right field into the Bobcats' bullpen for a three-run homer to cut the deficit to 10-5 and were the final runs of the contest.
Â
The series continues on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
