SAN MARCOS, Texas – The final three innings were costly as UT Arlington score all its runs in the time frame as Texas State fell 10-6 in the series finale Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.
Â
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 12-17 overall and 3-6 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Mavericks are now 12-15 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.
Â
Suffering the loss was
Tristan Stivors (1-2) as he surrendered the go-ahead runs in his inning of relief. Zach Norris (3-2) picked up the win with two shutouts innings out of the bullpen.
Â
Garrett Herrmann started on the mound and went six innings. The right-hander struck out four while giving up a run on six hits.
Â
At the plate,
Jose Gonzalez led the way with a 3-for-5 day as he hit two doubles and his fourth home run of the year. Finishing with two hits apiece was
Tucker Redden and
Justin Thompson.
Â
With two outs in the third, Thompson singled to center and Gonzalez followed with a double to left field. A 0-1 pitch to
Bryce Bonner was hit down the line and fielded by the third baseman. The throw to first took the first baseman into the base path to cause a collision and the ball bounced away from the fielder. This allowed both Gonzalez and Thompson to score to give TXST a 2-0 lead.
Â
Redden laced a one out single to right center. He would advance to third on a hit-and-run play with
Jaxon Williams hitting a single through the right side. After Williams stole second,
Chase Evans doubled to left to plate two runs. An RBI single by Thompson increased the Bobcats advantage to 5-0.
Â
The score would remain the same until the seventh. After back-to-back singled by UTA in the top of the frame, Texas State made a call to the bullpen. Doing so closed off the corners of the plate by the home plate umpire for the Bobcats pitchers and allowed the Mavs to tee off for 10 runs over the final three innings.
Â
Gonzalez hit his second homer in as many games with a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth with two outs for the final run of the game.
Â
Next up for TXST is a trip to Edinburg, Texas to take on UT Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday with first pitch at 6 p.m.
