EDINBURG, Texas – The Texas State baseball team (13-17) claimed its first road win of the season with a 7-4 win over UT Rio Grande Valley (13-16) Tuesday night at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Â
Otto Woffford (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings with a strikeout to pick up the win. Suffering the loss was Zach De Leon (0-1) after he allowed three runs in a third of an inning.
Tristan Stivors closed out the game to earn his fourth save of the season.
Â
Starting on the mound for the Bobcats was
Zeke Wood. The right-hander threw three scoreless frames with two strikeouts while walking three and allowing just one hit.
Jonathan Martinez struck out two and did not allow a run in two innings of relief. Also seeing action on the mound was
Cade Bullinger and
Hayden VanderRoest.
Â
Both
Jose Gonzalez and
Justin Thompson went 2-for-2 at the plate and drew three free passes apiece.
Will Hollis and Gonzalez drove in two runs each while Thompson scored three times and
Dalton Shuffield came around to score twice.
Â
Shuffield led off the game by reaching on an error and back-to-back walks loaded the bases.
Bryce Bonner grounded into a double play that brought home Shuffield to put the Bobcats up 1-0.
Â
The Vaqueros threatened in the second as they loaded the bases. Wood was able to strikeout Coleman Grubbs to get out of the jam and keep TXST in front.
Â
With two runners on, Gonzalez hit a fly ball out to right field. The outfielder slipped while trying to get to the ball and that allowed both runners to score and Gonzalez to reach third for his team leading third triple of the season and increase the lead to 4-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth.
Â
In the bottom of the frame, UTRGV loaded the bases and Coronado Diaz hit a bases clearing double to left center. A sacrifice fly was hit later in the inning by Freddy Rojas, Jr. to tie the game at 4-4.
Â
Chase Evans led off the eighth by reaching on a throwing error by the shortstop. After two walks loaded the bases,
Will Hollis was called upon to pinch hit. The first pitch to the McKinney, Texas native got away from the catcher to allow Evans to score and put TXST back in the lead.
Â
Hollis would then lace a 2-0 pitch to left center to plate two runs to increase the advantage to 7-4.
Â
Stivors came on and pitched a perfect ninth to close out the game.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a Sun Belt Conference series this weekend at Troy.
