SAN MARCOS, Texas – Junior third baseman
Justin Thompson hit a walk-off double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the series for Texas State (17-23, 7-7 Sun Belt) over Arkansas State (10-22, 5-9 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon with a 6-5 victory at Bobcat Ballpark.
Tristan Stivors (2-2) pitched a perfect top of the ninth and struck out two to earn the win. Taking the loss was Kollin Stone (0-2) after he gave up two runs on four hits over 1.1 innings.
Starting on the mound for the Bobcats was
Zeke Wood. He lasted 3.1 innings as he surrendered five runs on nine hits while recording three strikeouts.
Otto Wofford struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings and
Cameron Bush had two strikeouts and gave up a hit in two scoreless frames.
Will Hollis paced Texas State at the dish with a 3-for-4 day with two RBI and a home run.
Dalton Shuffield also had a multi-hit game with two base knocks and drove in a run. Stealing a career-high two bases was
John Wuthrich.
Hollis opened the scoring in the second when he crushed a 3-2 pitch to dead center off the batters' eye for a solo home run, his fifth of the season.
The Red Wolves answered back with a run in the next half inning on an RBI double.
ASU continued its scoring in the fourth with four runs on five hits and an error to take a 5-1 lead.
Cole Coffey pulled TXST to within three in the next half inning when he hit a solo homer to center field. It was his team-high sixth home run of the season.
Leading off the eighth,
Jose Gonzalez worked a walked and moved up to second on a passed balled. A ground out to the first baseman allowed Gonzalez to advance to third. Thompson drew a free pass and immediately afterwards saw the Red Wolves make a pitching change.
A 1-2 pitch was laced down the left field line by Hollis to plate a run. Two pitches later, Shuffield singled through the right side that nearly tied the game. Thompson easily scored from third to cut the deficit to 5-4 but Hollis was thrown out at the plate.
Starting the bottom of the ninth,
Peyton Lewis was called on to pinch hit and was hit by a pitch.
Isaiah Ortega-Jones was then brought into pinch run. He would move to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Chase Evans.
Jose Gonzalez nearly ended the game twice but saw one deep fly ball go just fall down the right field line, hitting off the wall. He would then crush a 3-2 pitch that was caught right at the wall in left, but it was deep enough to allow Ortega-Jones to advance to third.
A 1-1 pitch to Wuthrich was looped into center to tie the game. On the very next pitch, Thompson smashed it to the right center field gap for a double and Wuthrich came all the way around from first to score, sliding in just under the tag at the plate.
The Bobcats conclude the series with ASU on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
