Bobcats Fall Short in Series Finale at Troy

TROY, Ala. – Texas State (15-18, 5-7 Sun Belt) came up short in the series finale at Troy (14-16, 3-6 Sun Belt) 5-3 Sunday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Bobcats.

Freshman Jonathan Martinez (0-1) took the loss as he allowed a run on two hits while striking out two in two innings of relief. Marques Oates (2-1) picked up the win as he tossed three shutout innings out of the bullpen with three strikeouts. Earning his first save of the season was Max Newton as he recorded the final out of the game.

Zeke Wood started and went three innings with a career-high seven strikeouts. He did allow two runs, both unearned, on four hits and one walk. Both Matthew Nicholas and Otto Wofford threw 1.1 innings and Trevis Sundgren got the last out on the rubber in the eighth.

Tallying two hits apiece was Jose Gonzalez, Isaiah Ortega-Jones and Turcker Redden. Ortega-Jones drove in two of TXST's runs with the other being plated by Dalton Shuffield

The Trojans struck first in the second with an RBI single and would add another run on a single in the third to go up 2-0.

Wesley Faison battled and eventually drew a walk in the fourth. Redden followed with a single to center and both Bobcats moved into scoring position later on a wild pitch. On a 2-2 offering, Ortega-Jones hit a single to center that plated two runs to tie the game.

Troy retook the lead 3-2 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Nick Nolan. The Trojans' advantage was extended by run in the seventh.

An insurance run was added in the eighth on a solo home run by Cade Stearns to lead off the frame.

Justin Thompson was able to work a free pass to start off the ninth. Gonzalez followed with a double to left center to put runners on second and third. An 0-1 pitch was hit to center field by Shuffield that was deep enough to score Thompson and cut the deficit to two. However, that would be all the Bobcats would get as the next two batters were put out.

Next up for Texas State is a home game with Texas A&M on Tuesday that is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
