Leigh Throws Complete Game Shutout Over Mavs

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A pitchers' duel took place Thursday night at Bobcat Ballpark. Senior Zachary Leigh and Texas State (12-15, 3-4 Sun Belt) came out on top 2-0 over rival UT Arlington (10-15, 1-3 Sun Belt) as Leigh threw a complete game, 3-hit shutout.

Leigh is the first Bobcat to throw a complete game since Hunter McMahon on Apr. 27, 2019 at Louisiana. The last TXST hurler to go the distance with a shutout was Lucas Humpal on Mar. 4, 2016 against Incarnate Word.

The win was Leigh's (1-4) first of the season as he struck out seven, scattered three hits and walked one. Carlos Tavera (0-4) allowed two runs on five hits while striking out 12 in six innings.

A hit apiece was recorded by the Bobcats 2-6 batters with runs scored by Jose Gonzalez and Justin Thompson.

Dalton Shuffield recorded the first hit of the game for either team with two outs in the second as he singled back up the middle.

The Bobcats wouldn't record a hit again until Cole Coffey led off the fifth with a double to left center. He would move to third on a sacrifice bunt by Shuffield but would be left stranded.

UTA's best chance of scoring came in the top of the sixth. Carson Gregory led off by doubling down the left field line and was advanced to third on a sac bunt. With the infield in, J.D. Wadleigh hit a grounder straight to Jaxon Williams who threw home to catch the Gregory in a run down. Redden chased him down to tag him out while Wadleigh got to second. The frame ended with a ground out to Williams.

Facing a 3-2 count with two outs in the sixth, Thompson sent the ball just over the left field fence into the netting for his fourth home run of the season. Gonzalez followed with a single back up the middle and Bryce Bonner put runners on the corners with a single to right center.

A wild pitch allowed Gonzalez to score the second and final run of the game.

Leigh allowed just two baserunners the rest of the game with one each coming in the eighth and ninth innings.

The series with the Mavs continues on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
