HOUSTON – Texas State (5-8) closed out the Shriners Hospital for Children College Classic with a 9-1 victory over Rice (4-6) Sunday night.

Zeke Wood (1-1) pitched six scoreless innings with six strikeouts and gave up just three hits to earn his first win in a Bobcat uniform. Taking the loss was Reed Gallant (1-1) as he surrendered three runs on five hits in two innings.

Pitching an inning of relief apiece was
Cameron Bush,
Matthew Nicholas and
Tony Robie.

Justin Thompson paced Texas State with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with two RBI. Going 2-for-3 each was
Dalton Shuffield and
Ben McClain, who also drove in two runs.

Getting the scoring started for Texas State was
Peyton Lewis. Leading off the second, the sophomore blasted the first pitch he saw into the Bobcats' bullpen in right center field for his first home run fo the season.

The third started off with a double by
Will Hollis, who scored when Thompson also hit a double.
Jose Gonzalez plated the second run of the frame on a single back up the middle.

With the bases loaded, Mitchell Holcomb threw two wild pitches that allowed
Wesley Faison and Gonzalez to score. McClain followed a couple batters later with a two-run single through the left side to put TXST ahead 7-0 after three innings.

Hollis added to the team's total when he worked a bases loaded walk in the fifth.
Â
After the Owls got a run back in the top of the seventh, Thompson singled through the left side to plate the Bobcats' ninth run and final tally for either team.

Next up for TXST is a home game with TCU on Tuesday at Bobcat Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
