Bobcats Run-Rule No. 9 Horned Frogs in Seven Innings

SAN MARCOS, Texas – An offensive explosion took place Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark as Texas State (6-8) run-ruled No. 9 TCU (8-4) 11-1 in seven innings. It is the second straight season that the Bobcats have defeated a Big XII opponent by run rule and the first win over a top 10 opponent since beating No. 3 Houston on Feb. 25, 2015 at home.

All nine Texas State batters recorded a hit on the night as the team had a season-high 16 base knocks. Leading the way with three hits apiece was Jose Gonzalez and Justin Thompson. Also posting a multi-hit game was Will Hollis, Peyton Lewis and Jaxon Williams.

Both Hollis and Thompson drove in three runs apiece while Thompson plated two to increase his RBI total to 17 on the season.

Garrett Herrmann (1-0) started on the rubber and threw three innings with three strikeouts, two walks and one hit. He did surrender the only run that the Horned Frogs scored. Jacob Meador (1-1) lasted just an inning as he gave up five runs on four hits and two walks in his second start of the season.

First to see action out of the bullpen for Texas State was Austin Smith. The left-hander tossed three scoreless innings with three strikeouts while allowing two hits and walks. Reece Gould threw a perfect seventh inning in his sixth appearance of the year.

The scoring began for the Bobcats just three pitches into the bottom of the first. Hollis smashed an 0-2 offering over the right center field wall for a solo home run. After back-to-back doubles from Wesley Faison and Gonzalez put two runners in scoring position, a pitch from Meador skipped off the catcher's chest protector and all the way to the front of the visitor's dugout. That allowed both runners to score on the wild pitch and put the Bobcats up 3-0.

Back-to-back singles in the fourth off the bats of Hollis and Thompson plated two more in the second. Gonzalez just missed hitting a homer to right center but the ball skipped past the outfielder and allowed the sophomore to slide into third for a two RBI triple.

A walk with the bases loaded resulted in TCU's lone run of the game in the top of the third.

TXST answered back in the bottom of the inning with sacrifice flies from Gonzalez and Hollis to increase the lead to 9-1.

Following a scoreless fourth, Thompson led off the fifth with his first home run as a Bobcat over the left field fence.

In the seventh, Peyton Lewis just missed hitting a home run as it bounced just below the top of the wall in left center and settled for a double. Williams followed two batters later and crushed a 2-0 pitch that again nearly left the yard but also hit off the left center wall for the run-rule walk-off single.

Next up for TXST is a three-game series against Houston at home. The series begins on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
