SAN MARCOS, Texas – A 12-run fourth inning helped the Texas State baseball team (8-10) claim a 16-5 run-rule victory in seven innings over Rice (8-8) Wednesday night at Bobcat Ballpark. It was the seventh consecutive win for the Bobcats in the series.

Garrett Herrmann (2-0) pitched two perfect innings and struck out four to earn the win. Taking the loss was Garrett Zaskoda (1-1) after he gave up six runs on seven hits and three walks in three innings.

Jonathan Martinez pitched two scoreless frames with a strikeout in relief. Also pitching an inning out of the bullpen was
Rhett McCaffety,
Cade Medlin and
Tony Robie. McCaffety made his collegiate debut and Medlin recorded all three outs via a strikeout.

All nine starters scored at least one run for Texas State. Two-hit games were recorded by
Cole Coffey,
Jose Gonzalez,
Tucker Redden and
Justin Thompson. Breaking the 20 RBI mark on the season was Thompson with three driven in on the night. The trio of
Jaxon Williams, Gonzalez and Redden plated two runs apiece.

The Bobcats scored three runs in the bottom of the first on singles from Gonzalez and Williams and when
Johnny Gonzales reached on a fielder's choice.

In the fourth, Texas State sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 12 runs on six hits, four hit by pitches and four walks. Thompson led the way by driving in all three of his runs in the frame with one on a sacrifice fly and two more on a single to center.

The Owls scored twice in both the fifth and sixth to cut the lead to 15-4.

With an out in the bottom of the sixth,
Cameron Gibbons tripled down the right field line on the first pitch he saw.
Isaiah Ortega-Jones brought him home two pitches later when he grounded out to third.

Rice was able to score once in the seventh behind two Bobcat errors. Medlin ended the game by striking out three of the next four batters with the last two going down looking.

Next up for TXST is the Sun Belt Conference series opener at Little Rock. The first game of the set takes place on Friday at 4 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
