Series Finale Goes Against Bobcats

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Texas State baseball team (3-5) fell in the series finale 7-1 at Sacramento State on Sunday at John Smith Field.

Zeke Wood (0-1) started and took the loss. The junior right-hander struck out six in 4.2 innings but surrendered four runs on five walks and four hits. Eli Saul (1-1) recorded four strikeouts in six innings to pick up the win.

Also seeing action on the mound for the Bobcats was Reece Gould and Tristan Stivors. Gould threw 2.1 shutouts innings with four strikeouts and Stivors struck out three in his inning of work.

Isaiah Ortega-Jones paced Texas State at the plate going 2-for-3 and scoring the lone run. Chase Evans plated the team's lone run.

The Hornets scored once in both the third and fourth and added two more runs in the fifth.

Ortega-Jones nearly hit his second home run in as many games as he smacked a 1-2 pitched that hit near the top of the fence in center field. The ball bounced away from the outfielder and allowed the junior outfielder to easily reach third. Evans followed by hitting a deep fly to center that allowed Ortega-Jones to tag and score.

Tucker Redden attempted to extend a possible rally with a double and later advanced to third on a fly out. However, he was left stranded 90 feet from the plate to end the frame.

Jose Gonzalez led off the seventh with a single and three batter later Ortega-Jones doubled to right to put two runners in scoring position. Again, an attempted rally was stifled as both were left on base as the inning came to an end.

Sac State added three insurance runs in the eighth for the final score of the game.

Next up for the Bobcats is a return home for two midweek games. First up is New Mexico State on Tuesday followed by Texas on Wednesday. Both games are scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
