Bobcats Down New Mexico State 8-6

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team (4-5) took down New Mexico State (1-3) 8-6 Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Bobcats.

Otto Wofford (1-0) threw 2.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts to pick up the win. Tristan Stivors struck out one to close out the game to earn his second save of the season. Taking the loss was Josh Laukkanen (0-2) after surrendering four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings.

Both Bryce Bonner and Justin Thompson had two hits apiece. The duo, along with Peyton Lewis, drove in two runs each. Accounting for two runs apiece was Cameron Gibbons and Jose Gonzalez.

The Aggies were able to load the bases with two outs in the first. Brandon Dieter took advantage and hit a grand slam on the first pitch he saw to put the visitors ahead early.

In the bottom of the second, Wesley Faison, Jaxon Williams and Gonzalez were all walked on a combined 13 pitches. Lewis battled and eventually doubled down the right field line to bring home two runs. Bonner followed with a ground to the second baseman that scored another run to cut the deficit to 4-3.

TXST loaded the bases again in the fifth with two walks and a Thompson single. Following a pitching change, Williams grounded out to the first baseman that plated the game tying run.

In the top of the sixth, NMSU scored twice on bunts to go back up by two.

Bonner singled through the right side with one out in the sixth. The graduate catcher advanced to third on a hit and run single by Gibbons, who later stole second to put both runners in scoring position. On a 1-0 pitch, Thompson hit a looping ball that was just out of the reach of the second baseman for a two RBI single that tied the contest at 6-6.

After Gonzalez singled to center in the seventh, Faison sent the first offering to him to right center for a double. The centerfielder misplayed the ball, which allowed Gonzalez to score. Two batters later, Bonner laced an RBI single through the right side to put Texas State up 8-6.

Stivors started the ninth with a strikeout. After hitting the next batter, he induced a grounder to Cole Coffey at first. He threw to second for an out and Gibbons return throw to Coffey beat the runner for a game-ending double play.

Next up for the Bobcats is the first of two meetings this season with Texas in San Marcos. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
