Bobcats Fall in Extras to Split BYU Series

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team fell 7-6 in 10 innings Tuesday evening at Bobcat Ballpark to BYU in the series finale to split the four-game set.

Tristan Stivors (0-1) suffered the loss as he threw the final three innings with two strikeouts while giving up a run on four hits. Mitch McIntyre (1-0) tossed 3.2 scoreless frames with three strikeouts to pick up the win.

Johnny Gonzales, Will Hollis and Justin Thompson all went 2-for-5 at the plate. Hollis and Gonzales scored two and one runs, respectively, while Thompson drove in a game-high three runs. Also scoring twice was Cade Manning.

Getting the start was Tony Robie. The freshman lasted two innings as he gave up three runs on three hits and walks with a strikeout. Triston Dixon pitched three innings of relief and Matthew Nichols threw two scoreless frames with a strikeout.

The Cougars struck first their first time at the plate when McIntyre hit an RBI double to right center.

In the bottom of the frame, Gonzales doubled down the left field line and later advanced to third when a pickoff attempt sailed into center field. He scored shortly afterwards on a wild pitch to tie the game.

BYU answered in the second with two more runs and extended its lead to 4-1 after the top of the fifth.

Walks to Isaiah Ortega-Jones and Manning was followed by a single through the left side by Hollis to load the bases. A 1-2 offering to Thompson was laced to right field that plated two runs. Later in the frame, Hollis was able to score on a wild pitch to tie the contest at 4-4.

The visitors answered right back in the top of the sixth with two more runs. The Cougars had an opportunity to add on more in the inning but a delayed double steal attempt ended with Austin Deming being thrown out at home following a run down. Between first and second.

With two gone in the bottom of the frame, Hollis singled to left field to put two Bobcats on base. Thompson battled to a 3-2 counted before lacing a single to right to score a run. The very next pitch to Gonzales resulted in an RBI single to again tie the game.

Texas State had an opportunity to take the lead in the seventh that began with Chase Evans getting hit by a pitch. Following a Tucker Redden sacrifice bunt, Cameron Gibbons singled to right to put runners on the corners. BYU brought in McIntyre, who was able to stifle the Bobcats hitters.

Using the international tiebreaker in extra innings, Andrew Pintar scored the go-ahead run on a Deming sacrifice fly.

TXST was able to move Redden to within 90 feet of home on a Gibbons sacrifice bunt. The next two batters were unable to get him home as the Cougars took the rubber match.

Next up for the Bobcats is a meeting with Sam Houston State in Arlington, Texas at Globe Life Field. The game will be broadcast on FloBaseball. Live stats and an audio feed with Brant Freeman providing the call will also be available.
