Big Sixth Inning Propels Bobcats to Victory

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A 10-run sixth inning propelled the Texas State baseball team (2-1) to an 11-6 victory Monday evening at Bobcat Ballpark over BYU (1-2).

Austin Smith (2-0) picked up the win after throwing two innings out of the bullpen and striking out two. Triston Dixon earned his first career save after recording the final out of the game. Taking the loss was B Mabeus (0-1) after he surrendered five runs on three walks and two hits in an inning of relief.

Both Jaxon Williams and John Wuthrich led the Bobcats with two hits apiece. Wesley Faison and Williams plated a game-high three runs apiece and Cameron Gibbons drove home two runs.

The Cougars struck first in the second beginning with an RBI double from Andrew Pintar. They added a second run on a fielder's choice by Brock Watkins.

With an out in the sixth, Wuthrich singled to right field. Two batters later Williams was able to work a walk. Faison then blasted the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to put Texas State ahead.

Back-to-back walks were followed by Tucker Redden getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. Will Hollis singled to right field to plate run. Gibbons and Wuthrich drew walks and Johnny Gonzales was plunked to bring home three more runs.

The final runs of the sixth came off the bat of Williams, who singled through the right side. Both Gibbons and Wuthrich scored and a throw home allowed Williams to advance to second. An attempted throw to get Williams at second was off target and allowed Gonzales to score.

BYU was responded with two runs in the seventh to cut the lead to six.

In the bottom of the frame, Gibbons singled through the left side to drive in a run and make it an 11-4 contest.

The Cougars were able to plate two more runs in the ninth before Dixon induced a fly out to end the game.

Zeke Wood started and went five innings. He struck out three while giving up two runs on four free passes and two hits. Otto Wofford pitched a scoreless inning of relief and Cade Medlin recorded the first two outs in the ninth.

Tuesday sees the Bobcats and Cougars face off for the finale time. First pitch at Bobcat Ballpark is scheduled for 4 p.m.
