BOONE, N.C. – Sophomore
Mya Ulloa put home her own rebound with under eight minutes left on the clock for the lone goal in Texas State's (7-6-1, 4-4-0 Sun Belt) 1-0 victory over Appalachian State (4-8-1, 0-6-0 Sun Belt) at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium on Sunday.
Zoe Junior had the first shot of the match for the Bobcats inside the box in the 12th minute. Her attempt was going to be on target but a defender jumped to block it with her head.
Four minutes later, the Mountaineers' Emma McGibany took a rip from about 10 yards. Great reactions by
Beth Agee kept the ball out of the net.
Junior had another good look in the 24th minute on a shot from just outside the penalty box. However, the keeper was able to tip the ball over the crossbar.
Bailey Peschel took a shot off a corner kick six minutes later but the ball was blocked by a defender.
The last good opportunity in the first half came in the 32nd minutes off the foot of
Madison Humphrey. The junior unleashed a hard shot from 20 yards out that saw the goalkeeper get a hand on the ball to knock it off the crossbar.
First great chance for TXST in the second half came in the 67th minute off a free kick. From about 25 yards out, Ulloa sent the ball to the upper right corner of the frame that the keeper was able to tip over the bar.
APP had two opportunities to find the back of the net. The first came in the 70th minute when Olivia Cohen's attempt from 18 yards out clanked off the right post. Six minutes later, a cross into the box saw Breckyn Monteith head the ball right to Agee.
In the 82nd minute,
Kamaria Williams sent a long pass to an open Ulloa at the top of the box. After a touch, she was taken down inside the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Ulloa's attempt was saved by the goalkeeper but the ball bounced back towards the middle of the goal. The sophomore followed up by knocking it home for her third goal of the season.
The Bobcats' defense did not allow the Mountaineers to take a shot the rest of the match to claim the victory.
All eight of Texas State's shots were on goal. Ulloa led the way with three attempts and Junior took two shots.
In goal, Agee made seven saves to record her fourth shutout of the season. It was also the sophomore's 10th career win as she became the eighth Bobcat to reach double-digit wins.
Next up for the Bobcats is their final road conference match of the season next Sunday at Louisiana with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
