SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State soccer team (0-2-1) battled but fell to Lamar (1-0-0) 1-0 Friday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Sydney Kammer had the first look on goal for midway through the 21st minute. An attempt from the left side at the top of the 18-yard box deflected off a defender and right into the arms of the Cardinals' goalkeeper.
In the 38th minute,
Beth Agee came up with a leaping stop off a LU corner kick.
The Cardinals had the breakthrough a couple of minutes later when a shot from the top of the box by Esther Okoronkwo found a way under Agee's arm and into the back of the net.
Coming out of halftime, the Bobcats pressed offensively and got a few good looks from Kammer. A shot from the left side saw the visiting keeper just get her finger tips on the shot to deflect it out of bounds for a corner kick.
Early in the 50th minute, Kammer got off another shot from the top of the box that was blocked. The ball bounced right back to her and she unleashed another attempt that saw the goalkeeper make the save.
A corner kick in the 74th minute saw a scrum for the ball near the left post. The ball was knocked away from the goal and landed directly to
Trinity Clark. The freshman took back-to-back attempts that were both blocked by a defender.
The last good look for Texas State offensively came in the 79th minute again off the foot of Kammer. The senior had a strike that saw the Cardinal keeper come up with a stop at the bottom left corner.
Kammer finished the match with a career-high five shots and four shots on goal. Clark took a season-best three shots while
Emma Jones was credited with two attempts.
Agee made six saves between the posts.
Next up for the Bobcats is their first-ever meeting with Abilene Christian on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
