SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team (12-4) completed the series sweep of Bethune-Cookman (5-11) with a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark. The win also extended the Bobcats winning streak to five games.
Â
It is the best start for TXST through 16 games since 2016. For head coach
Steven Trout, the record matches the best start for a first-year head in program history (Howard Bushong; 1994).
Â
Otto Wofford (1-0) earned his first career win as he threw two scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts. Earning his fourth save of season was Tristan Stirvors. Taking the loss was Steven Ortiz after he gave up three runs on two hits and a walk in an inning out of the bullpen.
Â
Starting for the second time this season was
Reece Gould. He went 5.2 innings and recorded a career-high six strikeouts while giving up two runs on four hits. The sophomore right-hander was the fourth Bobcat hurler to set a new single-game career best in strikeouts this series, joining
Cameron Bush,
Brent Hebert and
Zachary Leigh.
Â
At the plate,
Will Hollis was 2-for-2 with two walks, one run and one RBI.
John Wuthrich plated two runs and added a hit. Also with a base hit on the day was
Cameron Gibbons and

Â
Redden led off the bottom of the sixth with a single back up the middle and Hollis followed by drawing a walk.
Jaxon Williams moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. A 2-2 offering to Wuthrich as smacked to right field, landing in fair territory near the line and rolled all the way to the wall. Both runners scored and the junior outfielder hustled all the way to third for his first triple of the season and fourth in his career.
Â
A wild pitch would that went all the way to the backstop allowed Wuthrich to trot home to put TXST up 4-2.
Â
BCU put together a two-out rally in the ninth and tacked on a run with Morales' single to center. Stivors closed the game out by getting the last Wildcat batter looking at strike three.
Â
The Bobcats' homestand continues with two midweek games. First up will be the first of three meetings this year with I-35 rival UTSA on Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m.
