SAN MARCOS, Texas – Junior
Wesley Faison capped off the night for the Texas State baseball team (13-4) with a walk-off home run to run-rule I-35 rival UTSA (10-7) 11-1 in eight innings Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark. It is the second straight week that the Bobcats have run-ruled a midweek opponent.
Â
The win extends TXST's winning streak to six games. It is also the best start for the program since the 2011 team began the year with a 15-4 record.
Â
Earning his second straight win on the mound was
Tony Robie (3-0). The freshman right-hander went five innings and gave up a run on seven hits while striking out one and not issuing a free pass. Cole McKay (1-2) took the loss as he surrendered a run on a hit and walk.
Â
Also seeing action on the mound for Texas State was
Cameron Bush and
Jacob Little. Bush tossed two scoreless innings with a strikeout and a walk. Little threw a scoreless frame and struck out two.
Â
Faison was the lone Bobcat with a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Both he and
Cole Coffey drove in three runs apiece.
Peyton Lewis plated two runs as well.
Â
Will Hollis was 1-for-1, scored twice and drew a career-high four walks, one shy of matching the program record for a game. Overall, TXST was issued a season-high 11 free passes.
Â
The scoring began for the Bobcats with two outs in the second as
Peyton Lewis hit his first career home run, a two-run shot down the right field line.
John Wuthrich drove in the third run of the inning as he doubled down the left field line.
Â
Dalton Shuffield laid down a perfect bunt to bring in the fourth run for the Bobcats. Faison closed out the scoring in the second with a bloop single to center field that landed in the middle of three Roadrunner fielders.
Â
UTSA scored their lone run of the game in the fifth when Dylan Rock hit his first homer of the season to left center.
Â
In the bottom half of the inning,
Jaxon Williams led off by drawing a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. He broke for third on a pitch in the dirt. The throw from the catcher was off the mark and Williams went on to score after hurdling the third baseman as he started toward home plate.
Â
The sixth saw the Roadrunners' pitchers issued four consecutive walks as Faison was credited with his second RBI of the game. Two batters later,
Cole Coffey laced a double to right center that cleared the bases and increased TXST's lead to 10-1.
Â
On just the third pitch of the eighth, Faison blasted his sixth home run of the season to make it a 10-run advantage and end the game early.
Â
The Bobcats are back in action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Prairie View A&M at Bobcat Ballpark.
