Box Score DECATUR, Ga. — A day after scoring 16 unanswered runs, the Texas State University softball team was limited to only one run and four hits as the Bobcats fell, 3-1, at Georgia State.
Sophie Mooney (3-3) and
Tori McCann (5-4) matched zeroes for the game's first two innings, before Georgia State (7-14, 1-1) broke through in the bottom of the third when a runner from third scored on a two-out wild pitch. A second runner scored during the next at bat, when it ended with a two-out single to right field. Two more Panther batters reached base, before the inning came to an end.
After a pair of zeros in the fourth inning, Texas State (14-8, 1-1) broke through when
Tara Oltmann scored from third base on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Cassie Valdez. However, the Panthers answered with their own sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning.
Texas State loaded the bases — for the third time in the game — in the top of the seventh after
Hailey MacKay drew a two-out,
ArieAnn Bell doubled down the right-field line then Valdez was hit by a pitch.
However,
Caitlyn Rogers fouled out to the third baseman to end the game and leave the game-tying and go-ahead runs on base.
The two teams, having split the first two games of the three-game series, will look to take the series when the teams return to the field on Sunday, March 8 to wrap up the three-day series. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
