Bobcats Comeback Late to Down Wildcats 3-2

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team (11-4) came back from a two-run deficit with three runs late to defeat Bethune-Cookman (5-10) 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.

Picking up the win on the mound was Cameron Bush (2-0) after throwing three scoreless innings with a career-high five strikeouts. Tristan Stivors set the Wildcats down in order in the ninth to earn his third save of the season. Taking the loss was Alejandro Valiente (2-2) as he gave up a run on three hits and got just one out.

Trevis Sundgren started his fourth Saturday game of the season and went five innings. The junior right-hander struck out five while giving up two runs on six hits and three walks.

Justin Thompson led all players with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate and drove in one run. Jaxon Williams had a multi-hit game with two base knocks. Both he and Will Hollis also finished with an RBI apiece.

BCU struck first in the second on an RBI single back up the middle by Shamir Morales. The Wildcats got another run in the fifth when Josten Heron doubled down the right field line.

The Bobcats got on the scoreboard in the sixth when Williams led off and smacked solo home run, his second of the season, to left field. John Wuthrich followed with a single and Dalton Shuffield was walked on four pitches. After a double play, Thompson singled up the middle that just got under the glove of the diving second baseman to plate Shuffield to tie the game 2-2.

Isaiah Ortega-Jones led off the seventh with a single to left field. Chase Evans laid down a bunt that he beat out for a single. The throw from the pitcher was errant and allowed Ortega-Jones to advance to third. The first pitch that Hollis saw, he smashed to deep left center that brought home Ortega-Jones for the game-winning run.

The series concludes Sunday at Bobcat Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
